Iker Casillas is arguably Spain's greatest goalkeeper of all time. During their UEFA Euro 2008, FIFA World Cup 2010, and UEFA Euro 2012 triumphs, he was their first-choice goalkeeper. Casillas was the last Spanish goalkeeper to make a name for himself at Real Madrid. The search for the next Iker Casillas continues.
Well, it appears that Real Madrid's search for the next big Spanish goalkeeper phenomenon is finally over. Los Blancos have already reached an agreement with teenage Mallorca goalkeeper Ferrán Quetglas, according to Spanish journalist lvar Moreno.
Ferrán Quetglas, a goalie for Mallorca's U19 team, is 16 years old. He's been called up to the first team several times this season, but he has yet to make his senior team debut. For the Spanish U-17 national team, he has four caps.
The goalkeeper's contract with Mallorca is set to expire on June 30, 2022, and he has decided not to extend it. As a result, Real Madrid will be able to sign the player on a free transfer.
Those who have watched the guy closely have hailed him to become “the best Spanish goalkeeper of the next decade.” Although it is easy in today’s time to identify any young talent who makes a breakthrough to be the ‘next big thing’ in football, Ferran Quetglas seems to have convinced Real Madrid of his talent.
What does this mean for the future of Andriy Lunin at Real Madrid?
Real Madrid signed Andriy Lunin in the same transfer window that Thibaut Courtois left Chelsea to join the current La Liga leaders. Lunin has only played in 32 competitive games since arriving in Spain, 29 of which he spent on loan with three different teams and only three of which he played for Real Madrid. What's more astonishing is that he has yet to appear for Los Blancos in a La Liga or UEFA Champions League match.
While it is quite likely that Ferrán Quetglas will play for Castilla or go out on loan where he will be assured a starting spot, Real Madrid could choose for the 16-year-old as a backup option.
Andriy Lunin does not appear to have much of a future at Real Madrid, in any case. In May, Courtois will turn 30. And he has at least 3-4 more seasons in him as one of the top three goalkeepers in the world. Lunin will not even be considered for that starting spot.
Lunin requires game time to develop. He is only 23 years old and has yet to play 100 competitive games in club football. Although things can change quickly in football, it appears that his future lies outside of Madrid.
All things considered, Ferrán Quetglas appears to be a very talented goalkeeper, and like San Iker, he should be the next first-choice Spanish and Real Madrid goalkeeper.
