Deputy majority leaders and Member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency in the Central Region, Afenyo Markins has made an interesting revelation about the suit brought before the Supreme Court over the approval of the e-levy bill.
A one-sided majority approved the controversial electronic transaction levy bill introduced in the 2022 budget presentation by the Finance Minister. The levy which is expected to rope in over 7bn cedis to support the construction of roads and other government policies was fiercely resisted by the minority.
After months of brawls, stakeholder engagements, press conferences and debates, the bill which was introduced on President Akufo-Addo's birthday was successfully passed despite the minority staging a walkout and subsequently challenging the decision on the basis of the house not forming a quorum.
The suit was filed by the minority leader Haruna Iddrisu, Mahama Ayariga and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MPs for Tamale South, Bawku and North Tongu constituencies respectively.
Reacting to the suit on the floor of the house, the deputy majority leader revealed that the minority does not have a scintilla of evidence to support their challenge.
"Mr. Speaker, if somebody has gone to court and is now wants to look for evidence to support his case, that person should let us know. This is a house that follows procedure. Mr. Speaker, we have read in between the lines", he said.
