Arsenal takes the lead as Man City joins the hunt to sign the PSV star for £42 million.

Arsenal are said to be favourites to sign Cody Gakpo, a £42 million valued winger from PSV Eindhoven.

In his 37 games this season, the 22-year-old has 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions, keeping the team in contention for their 1st Eredivisie crown since the 2017-18 season.

Such form has piqued the curiosity of European powerhouses, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich all reportedly stepping up their pursuit of the £42 million-rated star after it was rumored that PSV might be willing to sell in the summer if a good offer was made.

The Gunners are now the favourites to recruit the brilliant winger, according to Dutch publication Voetbal International.

Following the departure of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and the necessity to bolster in attack, Mikel Arteta's side were heavily linked with the Holland national during the previous transfer window.

They were handed a setback, though, when PSV extended the Dutch star's contract until 2026.

Despite his new deal, the Eredivisie club will find it difficult to keep the player given the amount of interest he has had from clubs all around Europe.

Earlier this season, the team's technical director, John de Jong, indicated that Gakpo would eventually leave.

'Of course, Gakpo wouldn't stay in Eindhoven forever,' he remarked. In the future, he will join a top club in a top league. Or will that be the case next summer? That's difficult to say.'

Gakpo earned his debut for Holland at Euro 2020 last summer, but he did not join the team for their friendlies against Denmark and Germany this month after suffering an injury during his side's Europa Conference League triumph against Copenhagen.

Arsenal will be looking to bolster their striking options during the summer transfer window, especially since attackers Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have yet to sign new contracts.

The Gunners' ability to qualify for the Champions League is a major reason in their decision to recruit Gakpo.

With ten games remaining, they are now in fourth place in the Champions League, 3 points ahead of Tottenham.
