GHANA TO BAN TOBACCO ADVERTISING AND DEPICTION IN ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA

Ghana is anticipated to implement a tobacco advertising and representation prohibition in entertainment media, as well as take efforts to make the country smoke-free by 2030.

 

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the prohibition would be enforced through a comprehensive tobacco control program.

 

Ghana has been designated as a Phase three nation by the World Health Organization (WHO) to assist in the attainment of tobacco-free status.

 

At the introduction of the WHO FCTC 2030 Project, Delese Mimi Darko, the Authority's Chief Executive, detailed several ideas to assist achieve this.

 

"The goal of the project is to create and implement a comprehensive national tobacco control plan." Strengthening the WHO FCTC implementation's inter-agency collaboration through capacity building. On Thursday, she announced the "implementation and enforcement of a comprehensive ban on tobacco promotion and depiction in entertainment media."

 

The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, confessed that the misuse of tobacco products is due to a lack of enforcement of legislation.

 

He has, however, committed the cooperation of his Ministry in achieving a tobacco-free society.

 

"The FCTC Project 2030 is now under progress, and I am thankful to the WHO and UNDP for technical assistance," he said.
