YAW OPPONG ASSUMES OFFICE AS DIRECTOR OF GHANA SCHOOL OF LAW

Today, April 1, legal practitioner Yaw Oppong takes over as Director of the Ghana School of Law (GSL). He succeeds Kwasi Prempeh-Eck, who is expected to step down.

 

This is due to his position as the Director of Legal Education at GSL.

Mr Prempeh-Eck was a senior lecturer at GSL from 1999 to 2007, and a senior associate at JLD & MB Legal Consultancy from 1999 to 2007. Before being named dean of the country's top law school, he worked as a senior lecturer at GSL and a senior associate at JLD & MB Legal Consultancy.

 

 

His appointment follows the Legal Professions Act of 1960, which requires the General Legal Council (GCL) to nominate a Director for the GSL.

 

When the 2022/23 academic year began, Mr Oppong was supposed to take over.

Mr Oppong, who goes by the name Omansomfo Barima Oppong Kodie, is the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa.

 

The Managing Partner of Ampofo, Oppong and Associates, a legal company in Accra, is also an attorney of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

 

 

Mr. Oppong has taught at a number of universities in Ghana, including Central University.

 

He was among those recently sworn in as members of the Graphic Communications Group's Board of Directors.

 

He has extensive experience and knowledge in the fields of energy and natural resources law. He also has a wealth of knowledge in Banking and Finance Law and Practices, having worked as a lawyer for a number of Ghanaian banks and financial organizations.

He's a member of the London-based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is presently the Managing Partner of Ampofo, Oppong and Associates, a Ghanaian law practice. He has lectured at a number of Ghanaian universities, including Central University.

 

He was just appointed Mawerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, one of the Akyem Abuakwa Paramountcy's sub-chiefs.

 

Mr. Oppong is also a prolific writer, having authored several articles and a book, the most recent of which is Contemporary Trends in the Law of Immovable Property in Ghana, as well as an online paper titled Domesticating Dispute Resolution Arising from Petroleum Agreements in Ghana.

 

He has been a regular contributor to topical conversations on a variety of legal matters for numerous years and is a frequent speaker on the subject.
