Former England captain John Terry believes Mason Mount will succeed Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea captain whenever he leaves the club.

Terry claims he admires Azpilicueta's leadership approach, but that the 23-year-old must be given the captain's armband if Chelsea is to make any meaningful 'progress.'

Mount has the 'capacity to seize a game by the scruff of the neck,' according to Terry, and his dedication to Chelsea Football Club will help him with the fans.

As a result, Terry has passed over Jorginho, who has been associated with the leadership after Azpilicueta's departure.

Mount, like Terry, started his career in Chelsea's youth before breaking into the first squad.

Mount was given the armband for their FA Cup fourth-round win over Luton in 2021, after cementing his spot in the starting XI.

Former manager Frank Lampard - who was sacked after the game - entrusted Mount with the task, but Terry believes Thomas Tuchel will do the same. Terry told alibendertv on Azpilicueta's captaincy and a prospective successor: 'He [Azpilicueta] has been fantastic, and like you said, there are numerous ways to skin a cat.' He approaches things in a unique way. His performances must first and foremost speak for themselves, which they do admirably. It's critical to be a consistent performer as a captain, week in and week out. Every week, you give a solid seven or eight out of ten. He does it for the sake of the group. 'And, once again, he serves as an example for everyone else.' I admire what he does, but I believe the path from there would most likely lead me to Mason.' I believe Mason has the potential to continue, and I believe he is capable of seizing the game by the throat if necessary.' He has a following among Chelsea supporters. He is, without a doubt, Chelsea. His entire family is as well. Personally, I'd want to see Mason take it.'

Mount has been a national and international success story. He has established himself as a key member of both Tuchel's and Southgate's squads. It's no wonder, then, that Terry has identified himself as Azpilicueta's possible successor.

This summer, Azpilicueta has been linked with a move away from Chelsea, with Barcelona being the most likely destination.

During his ten years at Stamford Bridge, the 32-year-old captain has won every trophy available. He's also won the Chelsea supporters' hearts.

As a result, his departure would be a loss to the Blues, but Terry feels Mount is capable of filling his shoes. Terry has been keeping an eye on the current Chelsea group, having won five Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, five FA Cups, and three League Cups during his time at the club.

When he attended England's training session at Tottenham before of their friendly against Ivory Coast, he paid a visit to a handful of them.

Terry, who returned to Chelsea as a part-time coaching consultant for the club's youth in December, was spotted on the sidelines.

The former captain was photographed with his hands in his pockets as he watched the team stretch in all black. Terry is regarded as a football legend in England. He made his Three Lions debut in 2003 and was named captain three years later.

After reports that he had an affair with Wayne Bridge's former spouse, he was stripped of the title in 2010.

In March 2011, his captaincy was restored, however he was divested of his duties again just 11 months later.

Terry had been fined £220,000 and given a four-match suspension for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. Terry, on the other hand, was found not guilty of racially insulting Ferdinand at Westminster Magistrates' Court. However, his international retirement was influenced by the probe into the situation.

Despite this, Terry earned 78 England caps and a slew of awards during his time at Chelsea.
