Ghana received $100 million in food exports in 2019, according to Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

According to him, rice, plantain, and yam were among the 19 food commodities sent to neighboring African countries such as Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

This was revealed by the Agriculture Minister in an appearance on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen show on Friday.

He credited the government's main program, Planting for Food and Jobs, for this achievement.

The effectiveness of the initiative, according to Dr. Akoto, has revolutionized people's perceptions of agriculture, particularly among the youth.

He emphasized that the first three years of the initiative had decreased food prices in Ghana.

This, he claimed, explains the government's massive earnings from grain exports to neighboring African countries.

"Everyday, 20 to 30 trucks of plantain are exported to Burkina Faso from Agogo in the Ashanti Region," he stated.

Farmers now have a market in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, to get closer to their clients, according to the Agriculture Minister.

Dr. Akoto is concerned about allegations of a food crisis when the situation in other parts of the country is quite different.
