The Student's Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has been unable to meet its financial responsibilities to students, according to the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

For the past two years, the SLTF has failed to pay student loans, and those enrolled in teaching and nursing schools have not received their stipend.

While praising the government for implementing the "no guarantor" policy for students seeking loans, NUGS President Emmanuel Yiadom Boakye raised concern over the money' delayed release.

"Our delight in the new policy is tempered by the Trust Fund's incapacity to repay student loans for the past two years, a troubling situation that the NUGS leadership deplores."

"As a matter of urgency, we ask the government to pay our students as quickly as possible through the Student Loans Trust Fund." "Those who rely on it will be able to acquire the funds they need to pay their school and tuition expenses," he said.

For the Union's 56th Residential Congress, NUGS leaders from throughout the country gathered in Ejisu, Ashanti Region.

"Ensuring Inclusive Equitable Quality Education and Promoting Lifelong Learning Opportunities for All; the Role of NUGS," is the theme of the Congress.

'In recent times, we have also had trainees from colleges of education and nurses receive some allowances to support them,' Mr. Boakye said. Though the government has done a good job of implementing it, there are still some outstanding debts owing to trainees by the government. Some students find it difficult to obtain notes and handouts, as well as field excursions and clinical fees."

Mr. Boakye continued, "We pray the government pays the allowances and maintains its payment for the greater good of our training college system."
