Ghana first choice custodian Joseph Wollacot says he was unaware of the football passion of Ghana before he pledged allegiance to play for the Black Stars. The Swindon Town Number One earned his first Ghana selection in October 2021 and has been the main goalkeeper for the Black Stars since his first game.
Reacting to Black Stars’ World Cup qualification against Nigeria, Wollacot says he did not know the West African country – winners of four Africa Cup of Nations titles – was such a huge football nation.
“Playing for Ghana, I didn’t realise before I went just how much expectation there is from the country and football is massive in Ghana, a lot of people follow it, so to deliver and make Ghana proud is the best feeling.” Wollacot.
It was probably one of the best feelings of my career.” the Black Stars goalkeeper concluded.
With Wollacot starting both games, Ghana drew 0-0 against the Super Eagles in Kumasi before drawing 1-1 in Abuja to pick a slot at the finals of the FIFA World Cup to be played in Qatar later this year.
Meanwhile the Black Stars have been drawn in the same World Cup group as Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
