The Belgian striker has been left out of Chelsea's squad and faces losing his spot in the national team.

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has hinted that Romelu Lukaku may have to leave Chelsea in order to make the World Cup squad.

Since his return to Stamford Bridge from Inter last summer, the striker has struggled.

Lukaku, who was placed on the bench for Chelsea's 4-0 win over Burnley at the start of March, has not started any of Chelsea's past four Premier League games.

The Belgium international has only made 20 Premier League appearances, eight of which have been starts, and his national team manager believes he will need to examine his status before the tournament in November.

"We're talking about individuals like Romelu who have over 100 caps and are part of this group of players who know everything there is to know about the national team," Martinez told The Sun.

"Because this isn't a regular situation, I'm not going to judge or analyse the status of any player until after the summer.""It's still seven months till the World Cup, and you'll probably get into more depth about how a player feels as the tournament approaches." However, many players will change teams or have a different feeling in the summer. Romelu, like Eden Hazard and others, must be evaluated based on how he feels in September.

"However, he's one of the players for whom the summer may be a pivotal period in their careers."

"We always chat," he added.

All of my players and I have a really close relationship. I would never instruct a player what to do, but we frequently exchange ideas. "Romelu is in a good spot right now. He is really dedicated." He was ecstatic to win the Club World Cup, and his next goal is to help Chelsea finish the season strong and give him a sense of importance."

Lukaku has only scored five goals since returning to the Premier League last season.

After returning from an injury in November, the striker struggled to reclaim his place in the starting lineup, and he made matters worse when he gave a contentious interview in December.

Lukaku expressed his dissatisfaction with Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel's system to Sky Sport Italia. "I'm not satisfied with the situation, and that's understandable," she says "he stated

"The head coach has chosen a different system, and I must not surrender; I must continue to work hard and be professional."

I'm not pleased with the situation, but I'm a hard worker, and I can't give up now."

"To the manager, I apologise, and to my team-mates and the squad because I believe it was not the right moment," the attacker said. "I want to move forward from this and make sure we start winning football games and that I perform for the team in the best manner."
