I HAD NO IDEA FOOTBALL WAS SO BIG IN THE COUNTRY – WOLLACOT

Before pledging allegiance to play for the Black Stars, Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper Joseph Wollacot claims he was unaware of the country's football passion.

Swindon Town's No. 1 earned his first Ghana call-up in October 2021, and has been the Black Stars' primary goalkeeper since since.

In response to the Black Stars' World Cup qualification success against Nigeria, Wollacot admits he had no idea the West African country – which has won four Africa Cup of Nations titles – was such a footballing powerhouse.

"I didn't realize how much expectation there is from Ghana before I went, and football is huge in Ghana, with a lot of people following it, so to deliver and make Ghana proud is the finest feeling." www.swindontownfc.co.uk quoted Wollacot as saying.

"It was certainly one of the nicest feelings of my career," the goalkeeper ended for the Black Stars.

Ghana drew 0-0 against the Super Eagles in Kumasi before drawing 1-1 in Abuja to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup finals, which will be held in Qatar later this year. Wollacot started both games.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have been grouped with Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay for the World Cup.
