What Diogo Jota notified to Joe Gomez was going to occur in Liverpool’s victory over Watford
Joe Gomez assisted Diogo Jota's goal in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Watford.
Diogo Jota has revealed that he "told" Joe Gomez before the game against Watford that he would get an assist.
Midway through the first half, the England international replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back and delivered an inch-perfect cross for Jota to put Liverpool ahead. It was Gomez's first Premier League assist since 2017 - though the quality of the delivery did not suggest it.
Jota, on the other hand, was confident that the 24-year-old would be an attacking influence for Liverpool against Watford. The pair were teammates in the recent FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, and the striker had some words of encouragement for his teammate in the locker room.
"To be honest," Jota told BT Sport, "I told Joe before the game that he was going to get an assist today." "I had a few crosses from him against Nottingham Forest that I didn't know what to expect, but today I was confident and I told him, fortunately for us, it went in."
Jota's goal brought his season total to 20 in all competitions, putting Liverpool on course for a 2-0 victory at Anfield.
It was a win that moved the Reds two points clear of Manchester City, who then regained top spot with a 2-0 win over their rivals at Burnley.
Gomez impressed yet again in his second league start of the season, albeit in a less-favoured full-back role, with Alexander-Arnold only named as a substitute. Gomez, on the other hand, admitted that he was delighted to play a part in the victory over Roy Hodgson's side.
"We know Trent (Alexander-Arnold) is a top player and what he brings to the team, it's not my natural position that I played today but I was happy to contribute today and, as Diogo said, he trusted my delivery today," he said.
