'I ALWAYS MISS OUT': MR.DREW

Highlife and Afrobeat musician, Mr Drew, has said that he should have been selected by the VGMA as part of the coveted Artiste of the Year category.

According to the 'Shuperu' hit-maker, his exploits in the past year deserved more recognition by the organizers of the awards scheme.

“I feel like I should have been in the album/EP of the year, male vocalist and artiste of the year,” he said in an interview on DayBreak Hits with Andy Dosty, Thursday, March 24, 2022.

He indicated that all the songs on his ‘Alpha’ “album are hits” and as such should have been nominated to the Album of the Year category.

However, clarifying why Mr. Drew’s ‘Alpha’ was not selected for the Album of the Year category, PRO of VGMA, Robert Klah, said that being nominated onto the category entails more than having hit songs.

“It’s not really about songs. This year it has been merged. Album and EP. So, elements we look at include hit songs and or quality of production… So, it’s a combination of the two to be able to determine a good fit for the category.”

Mr Drew also expressed “shock” as to why he was not nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year award.

Regardless of this he said he is not “disappointed at all” as he received more than 5 nominations.

This is because he believes he can achieve more in the coming years and if his work has not been rewarded as it should be now, it will be highlighted in subsequent VGMAs.

“I’m just looking for greater things. I feel like there is more I can do. I feel like it’s not really an issue. We move regardless. I’m somebody who is always looking into the future and looking at what I can do to better myself. At the end of the day, there’s going to be more VGMA shows and you can always get the chance to prove people wrong. So, I actually don’t think it is a problem.”

Last year, Mr Drew won the Best New Artiste of the Year and according to him, “people were saying he should have been in the Artiste of the Year” category.

He, however, pointed out that it seems his “consistent” work in the “last two years” has not been given much regard as he “always miss out on stuff like that.”

After the VGMA released a most of the categories for the scheme's 23rd edition, many industry players have expressed their concerns.
