If you think you are losing your memory, you are not helpless. Here are some tips to try out.
AVOID SMOKING
Cigarettes and cigars cause important arteries supplying blood with oxygen to your brain to constrict.
Smoking increases your risk of stroke or vascular dementia(memory loss) and doubles your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
KEEP YOUR HEAD SAFE
Avoid roller coasters and other rides which turn your head upside down.
It is thought that high-speed rides at amusement parks that make your head jerk back and forth may lead to minor bleeding in the brain.
Experts also advise wearing a helmet if you are cycling or skiing.
ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT WHEN DRIVING.
Clear the walkways at home and cover slippery floors.
Any injury to the brain changes the blood flow path, affects cell connections and could lead to memory decline.
TURN OFF THE TELEVISION
According to a study in Ohio, those who watch TV are at a higher risk of memory loss. In fact, the more time you spend glued to the TV, the worse the risk.
Even in-depth documentaries do not stimulate thinking and the brain in the same manner that conversation with friends, a hobby, learning new things or playing games do.
DO SOMETHING NEW
Surprising your brain with new experiences is thought to stimulate underused nerve cells in areas of the brain associated with memory and abstract thinking.
Nerve cells in these key areas tend to shrink with age, with a decline in the brain’s ability to absorb new information and retrieve old information.
Try, for example, dressing with your eyes closed, brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand, or even waking up with the aroma of vanilla in the atmosphere instead of coffee
TRY "NEUROBIE"
Neurobics, or cognitive training, consists of fun exercises that compell you to use your senses and find new ways of thinking
Research has shown that this kind of brain stimulation results in the secretion of neurotrophins, a kind of chemical fertilizer that stimulates the growth of larger and more complex dendrite
DO MENTAL EXERCISE
Try the following mental exercises to keep your mind sharp
Look for your house keys in your purse using only a finger
Take a different route to a destination you already know
Reverse the order of your stops at the grocery store
Write an email or letter with just one hand
Learn to mention words or phrases backwards or come up with other creative word games
There are lots of little activities that can help to improve your memory, whether it’s choosing a game instead of TV or making small changes to your routine to make it a bit more interesting. They could all assist and save you from having to write everything down for fear of forgetting.
