According to reports, Manchester United players are divided over Erik ten Hag's potential as the club's new manager.
The Ajax manager was reportedly the Red Devils' preferred candidate to succeed interim boss Ralf Ragnick at the end of the current season, according to the MEN last month.
However, according to MEN sources, while several United players are excited to work with Ten Hag, others believe he is a 'underwhelming choice.'
United has had a difficult season, and they are currently seventh in the Premier League, three points outside of a Champions League spot. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021, some fans and critics believe Ragnick's performances have remained stagnant.
In Saturday's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City, the Red Devils were fortunate to avoid defeat. In the encounter, Rangnick decided to start Bruno Fernandes at number nine. According to reports, football commentators have been perplexed by the choice not to play a famous striker while leaving Marcus Rashford on the bench.
Why is Erik ten Hag so important to Manchester United?
Since taking over in 2017, Ten Hag has had a highly successful stint at Ajax, winning 154 of his 208 games in charge and won two Eredivise titles. He even got his young team to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final within seconds.
Ten Hag stated in an interview with Sport1 that:
"Manchester United is a fantastic club with fantastic fans, but I can only reiterate that my sole attention is on Ajax, and we are already planning for next season."
During his time at the Johan Cruijff Arena, the 52-year-old has aided in the development of a number of exceptional young stars, including Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, and Donny van de Beek.
Manchester United prides itself on developing young academy talent, therefore Ten Hag's track record is a significant part of why he's the frontrunner for the Old Trafford post.
Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, was the first choice of certain prominent players, according to the MEN, despite having had a rough time in the French capital since his arrival.
Pochettino is also thought to have been interviewed for the position, although Ragnick insists the players are just concerned with their last eight Premier League games.
He stated, "
"I know they've spoken to a few folks, but we haven't yet discussed their experiences and impressions from those meetings. It isn't a problem for me. It's critical for me to concentrate on the upcoming games."
