WATERMELON WOMAN" ACTRESS GUINEVERE TURNER DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE...

Guinevere Turner, an American entertainer, and screenwriter played Diana in the 1996 film Watermelon Woman, a film that follows a youthful Black lesbian as she attempts to spread the word about a film about a Black entertainer as the "Watermelon Woman." Now, Turner examines the film and what it addressed, and why interconnection was significant then and is as yet significant at this point. She says that when the movie came out, it definitely stood out enough to be noticed, yet she says after these years, it is as yet having a "second at this moment." She additionally takes note of that now the chief, Cheryl Dunye, is getting a ton of consideration and many are thinking back and can't completely accept that her movie is the main component movie to be coordinated by a Black lesbian.

When asked about being in a film as a character who was an open lesbian in the 90s and how it compares to today, she says that her manager told her she should stop playing those roles or she would be stuck playing only those roles. To this, Turner explains how it was more than just a role but her identity, and that managers would not say this out loud today, even if they thought it. “They would find a different way to say it” she explained. She also says it is different now as there are a lot more queer characters in shows and movies, and many look at including it as a “badge of honor or a cool thing to do.”

What's more, despite the fact that inclusivity is something incredible, she says that she can perceive when a strange person is "attached" and just included so that individuals will see the show as comprehensive. She takes note of that while she loves to see the LGBT characters, a portion of the characters probably won't play a gigantic part in the show or film and are simply positioned to conciliate individuals.
