The Ghana National Chamber of Pharmacy has stated that it is still in discussions with stakeholders on proposals to collect consultation fees at retail pharmacies across the country.

According to them, the stakeholder engagement will take place on April 30, 2020, not when the policy would go into force.

After public outcry over the policy, Harrison Kofi Abutiate, Chairman of the Chamber of Pharmacy, revealed this in an appearance on Adom FM's morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

Ghanaians are split on the policies that the Ghana National Chamber of Pharmacy is about to implement.

While some support the concept, others contend that paying consultation fees at the pharmacy after seeing a doctor is equivalent to paying twice for the same service.

However, Mr Abutiate stated that if the regulation is enforced, it will not apply to pharmacies that are part of a health center.

Instead, he added that retail pharmacies that provide dispensary services will charge for things like drug dispensing, counseling, and other services.

Mr Abutiate suggested that the price may be based on a percentage of the total cost of the drugs purchased at the pharmacy.

"In certain nations, the cost is 1 to 2% of the prescription's worth, so we're still negotiating a fair pricing for consumers," he added.

The Chairman of the Chamber of Pharmacy emphasized that all they are doing is in the best interests of the Ghanaian consumer.

Mr Abutiate urged the public to back their initiative to ensure value for money due diligence.
