Dr Kwabena Donkor, a former Minister of Power, claims that if the government does not solve the issue of power generation capacity, Ghana would revert to the terrible days of sporadic power outages known as 'dumsor' in the next two years.

He claims that, despite the rapid growth in power demand and consumption, there has been no corresponding expansion in supply capacity, placing the country at risk of a crisis.

In a press conference, the Pru East legislator urged the government to take quick steps to bring new power supply units online in order to increase the country's total capacity and effectively meet the growing demand for electricity.

If urgent actions are not made now to increase our electricity generation, this country would most likely suffer load-shedding in the next two years. Every year, power consumption demand rises by 7% to 15%, and it takes at least three years to put a new thermal plant online. We appear to be sleepwalking into a situation where there could be power interruptions due to supply constraints," he warned.

Ghana's electricity supply has been very consistent recently, with only a few sporadic outages in various sections of the country.

This has bolstered the government's assertion that the country's power shortages have been resolved.

The government has stated that it is currently concentrating on examining all agreements.
