Erik Ten Hag, the 52-year-old manager of Ajax, met with United officials last month to discuss becoming the club's new manager, and is widely regarded as the leading candidate to take the job on a permanent basis this summer. Former United manager and fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal, on the other hand, has discouraged him from taking the job.

Simeone, who has previously been linked with the Old Trafford job, has now spoken about how the club is falling behind their domestic rivals. The Atletico Madrid manager told reporters ahead of this week's match at the Etihad Stadium: "United's characteristics were distinct from those of City. They're more direct and faster. City is more positional, and they manage things well in all areas. We need to build on and improve on the positive things we did (against United)."
