Gabby Agbonlahor, a former Aston Villa striker, has slammed Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. According to him, the goalkeeper was far too casual in the build-up to his error, which allowed Real Madrid to score in the Champions League. The Blues were two goals down against the Spanish champions after just 25 minutes, thanks to a couple of fantastic headers from Karim Benzema.

Immediately before half-time, Kai Havertz drew one back for the Stamford Bridge crowd, but calamity struck for the home side just after half-time.

Under no apparent threat, the Senegalese goalkeeper mishit a pass to Antonio Rudiger from 35 yards out. Benzema was able to nip in and slam the ball into an empty net to complete his unbelievable hat-trick. Los Blancos had won the game at that point. On twitter, Chelsea supporters defended the 30-year-old goalkeeper, noting how essential he has been to the west London club since his arrival in 2020.

When queried about the incident on TalkSport, however, Agbonlahor stated that Mendy "deserved" what happened to him, saying:

"Some of these keepers deserve it because they're trying to be so casual, and Rudiger's tackle from the terrible pass was also deserving." But nowadays, keepers are attempting to be so casual that he deserves it, and it will teach him a lesson. Following yesterday night's mistake, former Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois defended Mendy, insisting the Blues' number one has been fantastic since his arrival.

Following his departure from the Premier League club in 2018, the Madrid goalkeeper was booed throughout the evening. He told BT Sport:

"That's unfortunate," says the narrator.

Continuing, the Belgian number one said:

"Unfortunately, things happen in football for goalkeepers; you miss a pass and there's no one behind you to save it."

"He gave Chelsea a lot of points last year and helped them win the Champions League, so I don't think they'll hold it against him."

"However, I understand that it will be a difficult evening for him, but I am confident that he will bounce back.Courtois claimed that the unfavorable response he received was not unexpected, saying:

"I knew it wouldn't be friendly, especially at the stadium," says the narrator.

If you notice some folks outside the ground, they might be friendlier."

It's definitely a part of football, which is bad since the way they portrayed my departure was not accurate.

"But I'm satisfied with the result, and I'll always remember the amazing experiences here at the Bridge, like winning two Premier Leagues in four years, which isn't easy, so I'm grateful for that and the memories here, so what happened today doesn't bother me.
