Mane surpasses Gerrard as Liverpool's second-highest scorer in the Champions League, behind Salah.

The Senegalese international scored twice as the Reds won a crucial away match against the Primeira Liga side.

With his goal in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Benfica, Sadio Mane passed Steven Gerrard as Liverpool's second-highest scorer in Champions League history.

After finishing an assist from Luis Diaz, Mane scored in the 34th minute of the quarter-final first leg match, giving the Reds a two-goal lead. The strike was the Senegal international's 22nd in the European club championship, surpassing the English legend's record of 21 goals.

With 33 goals in the tournament, Mohamed Salah is the club's leading goalscorer.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead at Estadio da Luz in the 17th minute when Ibrahima Konate was set up by Andrew Robertson.

The Mali international has now scored his first Champions League goal (in his 12th appearance) and his first goal in all competitions for Liverpool (20th appearance), becoming the first Frenchman to do so for the Reds since David N'Gog in November 2009. (against Debreceni VSC).Darwin Nunez halved the deficit for the hosts four minutes into the second half with a stunning curler that flew past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The English team achieved a comprehensive away victory in Portugal thanks to Diaz's strike three minutes before full-time, with a spot in the final four their next goal in the competition.

Mane was replaced by Roberto Firmino after 61 minutes, while Salah was replaced by Diogo Jota at the same time.

The reigning African Player of the Year has been a key figure in Liverpool's squad since joining from Southampton in 2016 on a five-year contract worth £34 million, making him the most expensive African player in history at the time. His contributions helped the team break a 30-year Premier League drought, as well as win the Uefa Champions League, Super Cup, and the 2019 Fifa Club World Cup.

He shared the Premier League Golden Boot with teammate Salah and ex-Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 2018-19 season, scoring 22 goals.

He has scored 15 goals in all competitions so far this season, and he will be looking to add to that total when Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on April 10 to face Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
