Certain players, like any other human being, are not immune to making poor judgments that result in legal ramifications.
We take a look at a list of players who have faced the long arm of the law as the football calendar year 2021/2022 draws to a conclusion.
Many current and former football players have been sentenced to prison throughout the years, according to statistics, but we will only look at five examples that have captivated the attention of millions. Let's have a look at a list of football players who have spent time in prison for various transgressions.
Ronaldinho
After being charged with faking passport paperwork in 2020, the Brazilian was sentenced to five months in prison, which could have culminated in a five-year sentence for him and his brother, Roberto de Assis.
Instead of facing a hefty sentence, the couple accepted a plea deal that reduced their sentence to five months and asked them to jointly pay a $200,000 (£167,000) fine.
After making amends, pleading guilty, and celebrating Ronaldinho's 40th birthday on the jail grounds, the two were sentenced to prison.
Adam Johnson
Almost every football fan will remember this scandal. In 2016, Adam Johnson, a former player for Manchester City and Sunderland, was found guilty of child sex charges. He is one of the professional football players that has received a prison sentence.
Johnson, a former England international, was fired by Sunderland after an affair with a 15-year-old girl who cannot be named for legal reasons. Johnson, 34, was released from HM Prison Leeds and HM Prison Moorland in 2019 after serving half of his six-year term.
Ian Wright
Ian Wright isn't afraid to speak his thoughts, and the Arsenal legend has never shied away from discussing his time in prison and how it influenced him. The former striker was sentenced to two weeks at Chelmsford Prison in 1982, when he was 19 years old, the same prison where Tony Adams had served time for refusing to pay traffic fines.
Despite the fact that his sentence was only a few months long, Wright was fully aware of the impact of prison on his life. "I did say I would never come to a location like that again," he said in 2016, expressing regret. Wright is one of the rare footballers who has served time in prison in addition to his on-field success.
Mason Greenwood
Mason Greenwood is a character in the film.
In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested on charges of rape, sexual assault, assault, and issuing death threats. He was subsequently released on bond after spending three nights in a prison cell and being interrogated by authorities.
This occurred after his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend recorded him abusing her on tape. Greenwood has been suspended by his club, and United has announced that he will not be able to practice or play for them until the investigation is completed.
Footballers who have received prison sentences are just as bad as ordinary criminals.
BenjaminMendy
Between October 2020 and August 2021, the 27-year-old is accused of assaulting five women. Since his arrest in August, Mendy has been held in jail.
Three counts of rape are said to have occurred on October 11, 2020; sexual touching on January 2, 2021; two counts of rape on July 24, and two counts of rape on August 23, 2020. With these numbers, he’s one of the most infamous football players with a rape case against his name.
