Medical personnel at the Bank Hospital in Accra have found a concerning trend of renal illness among Ghana's youth.

They claim that the number of young persons infected with the illness is on the rise.

Dr Charlotte Osafo, a top worker at the hospital, warned the public to take precautionary measures during the unveiling of an ultra-modern kidney center at the facility.

"The primary causes of kidney disease in Ghana are hypertension and diabetes. Many people have hypertension, yet they are unable to regulate it. As a result, if you are diagnosed, it is critical that you take steps to reduce your salt intake, lose weight, exercise regularly, and eat properly.

"All of these are crucial, not just for hypertensive individuals, but also for diabetics, as diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney failure." Infections are also a contributing factor. If you go to the hospital and they tell you you have a kidney infection and give you drugs, you must take them," she insisted.

At the same ceremony, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the President's health advisor, revealed the government's plans to establish an insurance scheme to cover dialysis patients.

He went on to say that the insurance scheme will also help those with renal illness manage their finances.

"As a result, we also want to establish a renal fund or insurance system that will handle renal problems," he explained.

He also stated that the government intends to create legislation governing the donation of kidneys to people who may require a kidney transplant.

"But first, we need to pass legislation to support kidney transplantation so that individuals don't just capture people on the street and remove their kidneys to sell," he explained.
