Dubai currently has run a campaign for police dubbed the “Anti begging campaign” where beggars on the roadside of the country are arrested by the police and fined an undisclosed amount to pay which pay sources is a high amount but not disclosed yet. The police arrested 148 beggers yesterday of which 44 are women and 134 are men.  They deemed it wrong to beg hence the title “Begging is a wrong concept of compassion”.

The initiative was launched in March and has begun working massively, it was launched by the General Department of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and in cooperation with police stations and sub-department of the CID. The police upon arresting these beggars got the shock of their life after these beggars managed to pay the huge fine individually without having to call any close friends or family for help. The police and this initiative aim to reduce the rate of illegal begging since he added charity entities and foundations are willing to help the less privileged wholeheartedly without them having to beg on the roadside for it.

In one of their addresses, the Commander disclosed that;

“Begging is a serious threat to the safety and security of our society. We take the matter seriously as it ruins the reputation of the emirate and also affects the security as it increases cases of thefts and pickpocketing,” Col. Al Adidi continued.

“There are people who attempt to justify their illegal behavior with their financial desperation. However, according to Federal Law No. 9 of 2018 on Anti-begging, anyone caught begging in the UAE will be fined AED 5,000 and imprisoned for a term of up to three months. Those operating professional gangs of beggars or recruiting people from outside the country to work as beggars face a jail term of not less than six months and a minimum fine of AED 100,000.” Col. Al Adidi stressed.
