Afia, a 29-year-old woman from Bubiashie, described what happened to her two years after she had an abortion. When Afia's parents divorced when she was 11, she moved to Santa Maria to live with her father. She was a fourth-grader at a private school in Santa Maria at the time. Unfortunately, she miscarried at the seven-month mark of her pregnancy. Afia's mother decided that she would rather learn hairdressing than continue her education. For what they did, Afia acquired a loathing for the twins.
The lady found a new partner who was a trotro mate; he offered her money to buy her necessities, but he also slept with her in their car and at a fitting shop on occasion.
When her mother learned of their connection, she advised her to end it, but two weeks later she discovered she was pregnant. She told her partner that they should abort the baby, and he agreed with her and informed her mother. She gave birth to a son, but her boyfriend began dating other women, prompting Afia to sleep with many guys as a result of her partner's behavior.
She became pregnant again, but this time her partner publicly humiliated her and degraded her.
Afia terminated the pregnancy and ended her relationship with the man. She became ill two years later and was admitted to Korle bu Teaching Hospital. The physicians discovered that there was some water in her womb after a thorough examination.
They rushed her to the operating room, where the doctors discovered that she was unable to conceive again and informed her that she would not be able to give birth again. Afia felt concerned, but she was unable to warn her parents of her situation. Afia is now having difficulty giving birth; she has tried everything but has been unable to conceive again.
