Cristiano Ronaldo has delivered a social media statement in the aftermath of Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Everton on Saturday afternoon.
On social media, a video of Ronaldo smashing an Everton fan's phone as he walked down the tunnel at Goodison Park went viral. With his right hand, the 37-year-old Portuguese veteran appeared to fling the thing to the ground.
As the event progressed, Ronaldo and his United teammates were booed and heckled. Several police officers were stationed nearby but did not act. After suffering a serious gash on his left leg, Ronaldo was holding a shin pad in his left hand.
"It's never easy to deal with emotions at difficult moments like the one we're facing," Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. Nonetheless, we must always be respectful, patient, and set an example for all of the young people who enjoy this wonderful game.
"I apologize for my reaction and, if feasible, I'd want to invite this fan to see a game at Old Trafford as a gesture of fairness and sportsmanship."
United notified Mirror Football shortly after the incident that they were unable to comment at the time and were investigating the situation.
