Carlo Ancelotti insisted that Real Madrid will have close to a full squad to face Chelsea despite several absences in their win over Getafe at the weekend.
While Thomas Tuchel fielded a very strong team to secure the 6-0 win at Southampton on Saturday, Ancelotti rested several of his key players in the 2-0 win over Getafe.
Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal, and Ferland Mendy, who started against Chelsea, did not play a single minute in the La Liga match.
Mendy, in particular, had a minor fitness issue but will be available for Tuesday’s second-leg match against Chelsea, according to Ancelotti.
“He [Mendy] had an overload, and we preferred not to risk it,” the Italian said after the Getafe win (via Real Madrid’s official website)
“Apart from [Eder] Militao (who is suspended for the second leg), I think everyone can be in the Chelsea game aside from [Eden] Hazard, who is recovering from his operation.”
Real Madrid also confirmed that Mendy and Luka Jovic still trained separately from the rest of the group in Sunday’s training session.
Chelsea, on the other hand, will likely be without their captain Cesar Azpilicueta who recently tested positive for Covid-19.
Tuchel still managed to rest Reece James by employing versatile midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a right wing-back against Southampton.
