Christians in Ghana have joined Christians across the world in commemorating Palm Sunday, which marks the start of the Christian calendar's Holy Week.

The day, which falls on the last Sunday of Lent, is said to commemorate Jesus Christ's victorious arrival into Jerusalem on a donkey, only days before his arrest and death.

It's called 'Palm Sunday' because, according to the gospels, people in Jerusalem threw palm fronds in Jesus' path and greeted him with Hosanna cries.

Palm branches represent righteousness and martyrdom, or the victory of the spirit over the flesh, for many Christians. To commemorate the day, some churches around the country built miniature crosses out of palm leaves. Others staged numerous processions to replicate the arrival of their savior into Jerusalem.

The day's commemoration drew a number of comments and trends on social media platforms, particularly Twitter.

Some people reflected on how Christ was betrayed while relishing the joy that comes with the day.
