Cristiano Ronaldo "assaulted" a teenage football fan, according to his mother, after the Portuguese superstar seemed to smash a phone out of a spectator's hand during Manchester United's loss to Everton on Saturday.
Following United's 1-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park, Ronaldo was said to have knocked a phone out of a spectator's hands as the players were leaving the field.
Ronaldo apologized for his "outburst" on Instagram late Saturday and invited the fan to watch a game at Old Trafford - though he avoided explicitly addressing the story that he knocked a fan's phone out of his hands.
The fan in issue has since been identified as a 14-year-old autistic youngster who was attending his first football game.
"At full-time, the Man United players started walking off," Sarah Kelly, Jake Harding's mother, told the Liverpool Echo. We were in Park End, so we were right next to the tunnel where they passed by — my son was filming them all."
Ronaldo walked away with a cut on his left leg visible.
Kelly added, "He filmed all of the United players walking through." "Then he put down his phone because Ronaldo's sock had come undone and his leg was bleeding." He didn't even talk as he dropped his phone to see what it was.
"Ronaldo then simply strolled by, crushed my son's phone out of his hand, and continued walking."
Kelly said that her son had a bruise on his hand and was really distressed.
"You can tell he's been in contact by the bruise." She went on to say, "I can't believe I'm talking about it." "I was crying, I was shaken, Jake was in great shock - he's autistic and has dyspraxia, so he didn't fully get what was going on until he got home."
"He's quite upset about it, and he's decided not to attend to the game again because of it." This is his first football game, and it's already turned out like this.
"What a fantastic time we had."
"I'd understand if Jake was waving it in his face, but he wasn't near his face; he was checking his injuries down by the floor."
"As a mother, I perceive it as an autistic son who has been assaulted by a football player."
Merseyside Police said that an alleged assault is being investigated and that inquiries are continuing.
