Following conflicts between Akatsi police and the youth yesterday morning, two people are said to be dead in the Volta Region's Akatsi.

According to accounts, the enraged youngsters gathered at the police station last Friday to demand the return of a motorbike seized by the Akatsi police.

The police reportedly ran down three people on a motorbike with their riot van near the Akatsi Training College, killing one of the riders, according to the report.

As a consequence of the confrontation, the cops are accused of firing rounds at the teenager. Meanwhile, military forces have been dispatched to the region to assist in maintaining law and order and preventing the situation from spiraling out of control.

According to a witness, the teenagers were protesting the death of one Etornam last month as a result of suspected police abuse.

He said that motorcyclists had been harassed by police in the municipality on a regular basis.

He recalled a recent instance in which police in the AkatsiDistrict brutalized a young guy after accusing him of stealing; the accused died afterwards, resulting in a misunderstanding between the police and the teenager.

"On Friday night, about 11:00 p.m., the police hit one of the youths with their car, and when they took him to the district hospital, he died." The teenagers went to the police station this morning to get the motorbike, and the officers began fighting with them. Two of the men who had been brought to Ho for treatment were shot.

"The cops have brought some armored cars into town and are firing," an eyewitness stated.

Supt. Isaac Baah, the Akatsi District Commander of Police, stated that the police were attempting to reduce tensions in the region.

He stated that police were collaborating with community leaders to fix the issues.
