The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reacted to reports that the country's public school teachers may be required to wear a mandated uniform.

Despite images of some instructors wearing brown uniforms circulating on social media, the Service says it is not creating a uniform for teachers.

Professor Akwasi Opoku Amankwa, the Director General of GES, responded to the photographs circulating on social media by denying the introduction of prescribed uniforms, calling it fake news.

"GES is not a mushroom agency," he explained. It is Ghana's largest government agency. More than half of all government employees work for us. If we want to introduce teacher uniforms, we won't do it over the weekend or on social media."

He stated that the Service is considering investigating whether those wearing the alleged uniforms are GES teachers or non-teaching personnel who chose to use photoshop.

"I'm guessing it's a bunch of instructors who have settled on a uniform." It's also possible that it's photoshop. We may have to track down those in the photos to see if they are teachers, and if so, what motivates them to wear the outfit.

"GES cannot create a uniform for teachers without including teacher unions in this era of unionized labor."

Issues such as who pays for the fabric, the government or individuals, and so on would have to be discussed."
