Amnesty International (AI) has urged the government and state institutions to investigate and provide long-term remedies to human rights breaches that occurred in 2021/2022.
According to the organization, the state and its institutions perpetrated several human rights violations against people and groups in 2021, which must be investigated and resolved.
Mr. George A. B. Aggrey, Board Chair, AI Ghana, stated the concerns of human rights cut across all human communities when launching its 2021/2022 human rights report in Accra on Thursday, with the topic "the State of Ghana's Human Rights within the Global Environment."
"We are also working on issues within our own country, and as the report indicates, cases of excessive and unnecessary use of force by security personnel, inhumane prison conditions, the right to health, environmental degradation, forced evictions, gender-based violence, and other issues must be addressed appropriately." He was agitated.
He did, however, applaud the government for its efforts in containing the Covid-19 epidemic.
"We did not only report on the bad side of the government; we also applaud the government since the usage of drones was also utilized to carry vaccinations to underprivileged communities so that they may be inoculated," he stated. As a result, this suggested that our report is quite fair and comprehensive."
According to Madam Hannah Osei, Human Rights Education and Youth Engagement Co-ordinator, the organization recognizes "Chapter 5 of Ghana's 1992 constitution, which states that fundamental rights and freedom shall be respected and upheld by the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary, as well as all other departments and agencies of government."
She went on to say that, while there had been progress in human rights since the 1992 constitution, there were still a number of issues that needed to be addressed right now.
