Some students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are concerned that they would be forced to defer their studies due to a lack of funds.

Students who do not pay at least 70% of their fees by last Thursday will be automatically postponed, according to an earlier notice from the university.

As students prepare for their exams on Monday, April 11th, the Student Representative Council (SRC) reports that it has received over 300 objections from students who may be impacted by the decision.

While the student leadership claims it is seeking to get a concession from the institution, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the school's Relations Officer, stated the deferment directive is part of the university's long-standing regulations that compel students to attend classes.

He stated that the school has already provided sufficient space for students to pay their tuition, and that all students should have paid their money by now.

"At the start of each semester, all students are required to register for classes and pay 70% of their tuition. We have given pupils a very long grace period to complete this task. Technically, we reopened in January, but due to the UTAG strike, we had to restructure the semester, which began on February 24th.

"We are now in April, and we are preparing for the mid-semester assessment, and the principle is that if you do not register for your courses, you are not a student, so if we have ran out of classes, you are not a student, so if we have run out of classes, you are not a student."
