THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE BETWEEN KUSASI AND MAMPURUSI IN BAWKU, YEARS BACK.
When former president Rawlings took over office as a military ruler, he wanted to check so many wrong doings in the country, including smuggling. Especially fuel smuggling out of the country. Mr Rawlings had visited Bawku to look at many things including the famous "kalabule". "Kalabule" was a term referring to illegal smuggling of fuel from Bawku to Togo and Burkina faso. The practice hatched money for many people in the area, however, it milked the state, so Rawlings wanted to stop it for good.
Upon his arrival in Bawku, he told the crowd, "you people say you are Godly, you use your foreheads to hit the ground in order to glorify God, but you are doing smuggling". He got furious with illegal dealers. He chastised people who were into those deals. Apparently, he was told Bawku had two parallel chiefs, one a Kusasi and another a Mamprusi. The Mamprusi chief was present at the gathering but the Kusasi was absent. So asked his men to go and bring the the Kusasi chief to the event. His men took his orders and the Kusasi chief was brought.
Upon the arrival of the Kusasi chief, Rawlings told the two chiefs to come together and shake hands in order to make peace to prevail. The chiefs did not wanted to adhere to his orders, so he commanded his soldiers "give me a gun". Quickly, the chiefs came together and held each other hands, the Kusasi chief incanted 'ngba-am ndaw la zina". Meaning I have gotten my man today.
This incident took place at the Bawku Community centre under a tree. When the program was done and everyone left home, the tree under which they shook hands dried off and the Mamprusi chief also went home and died. The Mamprusis were shocked that a Kusasi man could overpower a Mamprusi.
Man with spiritual powers. So they starting the allegation that "Naba Wabugu Azoka I" father of the current Bawku Naba Azoka Asigri Abugrago II , is Yanga. They believe Yangas are those that are powerful but not Kusasis. The Mamprusi has never won any spiritual battle in Bawku against Kusasis. The gods are behind the land owners and almighty God is also with them.
