Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has stated that he will not be able to play for the team any time soon.

The Black Stars' all-time leading scorer was asked if he would return to the team for the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.

According to the former Sunderland striker, he is not physically fit to play competitive football at the moment and will not accept any call-ups.

"Because I haven't retired, I believe I must earn the call-up." "I need to train and play actively for a club, as well as perform, in order to get the call-up," Gyan said during an interview on Peace FM's Kokrokoo show.

"I believe that earning a call-up should not be based on the number of goals I have scored in the past. Before I accept the call-up, I need to be in good shape and actively playing for a team."

The 36-year-old added that he would have to be mentally and physically prepared to return to the Black Stars for the World Cup in 2022.

"Looking at Roger Milla and what happened, it is possible, but the most important thing is that I believe it will all depend on me." I need to be physically fit; I believe I am naturally gifted and capable of doing anything on the field, but I don't believe I am physically prepared.

"I am not fit to play and need to lose some weight and get in shape to play competitive football, which I am not right now," he added.

Gyan has appeared in three World Cups, in 2006, 2010, and 2014, and is the top-scoring African in the competition.

After leaving Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities, the former Al-Ain striker is currently unattached to any club.
