Customers, including government institutions, have been warned by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to settle their debts.

The National Revenue Protection Taskforce, which unearths unlawful connections, would disconnect institutions that do not pay their debts as stated by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) legislation.

A coordinator from the Ministry of Energy will lead the company's National Revenue Protection Taskforce. According to ECG, it has the authority to provide a list of institutions that owe it money.

However, the company said in a statement that it will not give up on its attempts to guarantee that all invoices are paid, and that consumers should "pay your bills quickly to prevent any humiliation."

Meanwhile, state-owned businesses and customers have been advised to check the ID cards of taskforce members and "fully cooperate in this crucial national exercise."

Defaulters, including government institutions, are warned that they will be disconnected by ECG.

Parliament House, the Ministry of Communications, the University of Ghana, the United Nations Development Programme, and 31 other institutions were given a three-day deadline to pay their debts or face being disconnected.

The impacted institutions owe the electricity distribution firm close to GH70 million, according to the corporation, and have refused to pay despite multiple reminders.

The Finance Ministry and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) were among the organizations removed from the national grid by the ECG in March this year for failing to pay their bills.
