Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, expects the National Youth Volunteerism Program to make a major contribution to the country's GDP and, as a result, to improve national development.
He believes that the community-based project will allow kids to improve their abilities while also encouraging active citizenship for national development.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, speaking at the opening of the National Young Volunteering Program in Kumasi, admitted that the official job sector alone cannot drive national growth because it employs just a small percentage of the country's youth.
As a result, he believes that by establishing the volunteer program, Ghana would be able to record a considerable proportion of GDP, as evidenced by statistics from other nations.
"We must acknowledge that we cannot accomplish our goals just through official work, and here is where the spirit of volunteerism comes in."
"Volunteerism has been estimated to contribute as much as 2.4 percent of a country's GDP in other nations with active volunteerism," he added.
Over the course of the next five years, the National Youth Volunteering Program seeks to empower more than 100,000 Ghanaian youth.
The community-based project is in line with the government's aim of accomplishing local and national sustainable development goals.
