WHO applauds the formation of a new Heads of State and Government Group to accelerate progress toward the SDG target of a one-third reduction in "premature" deaths from diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and lung disease, as well as the promotion of mental health and well-being.
The decision was made today in Accra, Ghana, at the first International Strategic Dialogue on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and the Sustainable Development Goals, which also saw the establishment of a new Global Compact on NCDs. WHO, in collaboration with the governments of Ghana and Norway, hosted the discussion.
The NCD epidemic, which kills seven out of ten people worldwide due to risk factors such as cigarettes, alcohol, poor food, physical inactivity, and air pollution, was highlighted by the heads of state.
