Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame has stated that the Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyekye Quayson must suffer the same fate of the late Member of Parliament for Bawku, Adamu Dramani Sakande.

It will be recalled that the deceased MP for Bawku was sentenced to two years imprisonement for failing to denounce his UK citizenship before contesting for the Parliamentary election.

He was charged with perjury, false declaration of office and deceit of a public officer to which he was found guilty and jailed.

In a similar case, the MP for Assin North was also ordered by the Cape Coast High Court not to hold himself as MP for the area and election nullified which has been affirmed by a 5-2 decision of the Supreme Court after an appeal was filed by lawyers of the defendants.

The Supreme Court in a 5-2 decision upheld the decision of the Cape Coast High Court restricting James Gyekye Quayson from holding himself as MP. Presided over by Justice Jones Dotse and included are Professor Henreitta Mensah Bonsu, Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Torkono, Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi voted in favour of the decision while Justice Agnes Dordzie and Nene Amegatcher dissented.

Reacting to the judgement after court proceedings, the attorney general said "think that there ought to be an even application of the law. The same fate that befell Adamu Dramani Sakande who was not qualified at the time that nominations were opened and we all know what happened to him".

The Assin North MP filed documents to contest for the Parliamentary elections even though he was still holding his Canadian dual citizenship.
