Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night, thanks to Carlo Ancelotti's changes.
And the Italian is well aware of the significance of the substitutes, claiming afterwards that it was their enthusiasm that enabled Los Blancos to execute another epic comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In his post-game press conference, Ancelotti observed, "We won this tie owing to enthusiasm." "I made the modifications I did to give myself more energy.
"The team went through a lot of hardships, and all of the players gave it their all." We didn't earn a 2-0 deficit. Because we didn't have [Eder] Militao, we struggled on set pieces. We struggled, and after the 2-0 defeat, we fell into a psychological rut, but the stadium's charm once again aided us much.
"The more suffering we go through, the happier I am."
Eduardo Camavinga was one of the players who made a big difference off the bench for Real Madrid, and Ancelotti admitted that the midfielder should start more often.
"He can play from the start, but he does inject a lot of energy into the game when he comes on," Ancelotti added. "If you have Rodrygo [Goes], [Fede] Valverde, and Camavinga on the field, you have a really good team physically."
After Villarreal eliminated German heavyweights Bayern Munich, LaLiga Santander now has two teams in the Champions League semi-finals. If Atletico Madrid defeats Manchester City, the count might increase to three.
Ancelotti remarked, "I'd like to congratulate Villarreal and Unai Emery on reaching the semi-finals."
"There are already two Spanish teams in the semi-finals, and there could be three tomorrow."
