Over the weekend, AirtelTigo, in partnership with the International Sickle Cell Centre (ISCC) in Ghana, conducted a sickle-cell disease awareness and screening exercise in Ajumako's Ajumako-Mando Traditional Area.
This is in support of efforts in Ghana to promote awareness of the sickle-cell disease (SCD) and enhance the lives of those who suffer from it.
"Approximately 18,000 infants are born each year in Ghana with sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited blood illness," Nancy Assor Asiedu-Amrado, Head of Brand and Communication at AirtelTigo, stated during the education and screening activity.
We are glad to cooperate with ISCC to promote sickle cell education and commence today's screening in the Ajumako-Mando traditional region through our corporate social initiative, AirtelTigo Touching Lives.
This is the start of a massive joint effort in Ghana to combat sickle-cell disease. We are driven by our philosophy of making life simple for our clients by social initiatives that add value to the society in which we operate as we strive to provide the finest and most reliable communications service in Ghana."
Dr. Mary Ansong, Founder and President of the ISCC, addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for hosting the team and expressing interest in SCD.
"One of the key issues in reducing the morbidity and mortality rate of sickle-cell disease in Ghana and Africa is a lack of understanding about the disease and the necessary therapies to save lives," she noted. As a result, it is critical for Ghana to take any action to mitigate it.
