During a brawl in Madrid, riot police had to separate Chelsea and Manchester City thugs.

On Tuesday, terrible sights transpired in the Spanish capital's iconic Plaza Mayor area.

A total of 8,000 fans were scheduled to travel from England to Spain to see the quarter-final matches of the Champions League.

On Tuesday, Chelsea took on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, 24 hours before City's second leg at Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano.

And video footage shared on social media shows rival fans yelling and chanting at one another.

Then fights were thrown and drinks were thrown before the notoriously tough-on-crime Madrid police arrived with batons and shields to restore order.

Blues fans were left heartbroken after witnessing their team's heroic efforts.

Chelsea had a 3-0 lead at the Bernabeu and were leading 4-3 on aggregate.

Rodrygo forced extra time, and Karim Benzema headed in the winner to send Los Blancos to the semi-finals.

They will play either City or Atletico Madrid there.

Kevin de Bruyne scored the only goal in the first leg in Manchester, putting the match in a good position for the second leg at the Wanda tomorrow night.

After Uefa charged Atletico Madrid for fans' "discriminatory behavior" at the Etihad last week, City knows a draw will be enough to see them through in a partially-closed stadium.

Atletico, on the other hand, has never lost a Champions League tie after losing the first leg by one goal away from home.
