Madam Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga East Municipal Assembly, has expressed her delight at the start of the rehabilitation of the drainage system beneath the Achimota Mile 7 Flyover.
She claimed her repeated contacts to the authorities, particularly the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highways Authority, had paid off, and she thanked them profusely for following through on their pledge to fix the problem.
"When I first took office, I arrived with the technical staff to do feasibility studies, and then I wrote and presented a report to the Regional Minister," she explained. We are grateful to God for allowing this job to begin."
When the MCE visited the site to check the continuing reconstruction work, she remarked this.
She explained that the project required the installation of new, larger sewers to remove water that accumulated at the site whenever it rained, and that it was intended to reduce floods and enhance traffic flow under the overpass.
"Phase one of the project, which is being carried out by Highbrains Limited, entails the excavation and installation of larger pipe culverts, measuring 900mm and 1,100mm in diameter, from the Old Peace FM (now Best Point) to the underpass and from there to Achimota ABC."
The flow of water will be diverted from the current blocked drains and chambers around the overpass into the new culverts, which could retain large quantities of water and end the flooding crisis, according to Madam Kaakie Mann.
