BIBLE ABHORS DIVORCE, BUT NO CHURCH SUPPORTS ABUSIVE MARRIAGE

Despite the fact that the Bible forbids divorce, no Christian church encourages people to stay in violent relationships, according to Reverend Professor Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, President of Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra.

Individuals and society, not the Church, were to fault for abusive marriages, according to Rev Asamoah-Gyadu, because some cultural contexts did not take concerns of marriage abuse seriously.

Domestic violence in marriage has been a scourge in the country, with the Church bearing the brunt of the blame for failing to perform its part as an integral component of the socialization process.

Rev Asamoah-Gyadu told the Ghana News Agency in Accra that God made all humans sensible, and that no matter what was at stake, one could not rationalize concerns of abuse in a relationship for whatever reason.

Rev Asamoah-Gyadu said churches must be realistic in dealing with issues of abuse, citing the death of prominent Nigerian Gospel Artist, Osinachi Nwachukwu of 'Ekwueme' fame, who purportedly died from domestic violence.

"As much as the Church urges families to remain together, God is concerned about everyone," he stated.
