Luke Shaw, a Manchester United defender, is set to miss the remainder of the season due to a 'longer than expected' recovery after surgery.
Last week, the England international underwent surgery to have metal bolts placed into his leg after breaking it in a Champions League match in 2015.
Shaw was anticipated to return in a matter of weeks, according to interim coach Ralf Rangnick, but the operation is taking longer than expected, according to the Telegraph.
According to reports, the 26-year-old could miss the rest of the season, putting United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season in jeopardy.
Shaw first noticed a problem with his leg while traveling with England on international duty. The left-back then got attention near the conclusion of Manchester United's recent 1-1 draw with Leicester, but he continued until the break, when he was replaced.
'We had to take him off at half-time because he is having problems with his leg where he had the operation back in 2015,' interim manager Ralf Rangnick stated last week. The doctor informed me that they have decided to remove the metal bolts in his leg, which he requires, and that this is currently taking place, and that he would be away for the next two or three weeks. 'While Rangnick wanted to have Shaw back soon, current sources indicate that they are in a race against time to have him healthy for the remainder of the season.
United are now seventh in the table, six points behind Tottenham Hotspur for the final Champions League position, after dropping points in a 0-0 draw with Leicester and a 1-0 defeat against Everton.
It means they only have seven games left to save their season.
In September 2015, Shaw suffered a double leg fracture as a result of a clumsy challenge from then-PSV defender Hector Moreno.
He missed 11 months of action in all and would not return to the United team until the 2018-19 season.
'I was on the verge of losing my leg,' Shaw admitted in 2018.
'I didn't realize it until the doctor told me six months later.' They were considering flying me back [from Holland] at the moment.
'I would have probably lost my leg if I had flown back [to Manchester] because of the blood clots in my leg.' 'They had to cut my leg open and remove the clots out, so I have two scars down the side of my leg.'
This season, Shaw has been plagued by injuries, prompting Rangnick to rely on Brazilian backup Alex Telles on a regular basis.
