Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba should be sold this summer, according to Jamie Carragher, a possible Manchester United manager. If the manager wants to establish his authority, the pair should not be at the club next season, according to the Liverpool icon.
Manchester United is said to have decided on the current Ajax manager as their new manager. Since ousting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last year, the Red Devils have been looking for a new manager, but have waited to find the right fit.
It came down to Mauricio Pochettino and Ten Hag, and the Ajax manager appears to have won the race.
When speaking to CBS Sports, Carragher said:
"I believe it is a courageous decision. Pochettino would have been the obvious choice because he has experience in the Premier League, but they have chosen a manager who has never worked in the Premier League. In terms of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, they've always gone with the established name. So what I mean is that he doesn't manage at a large club and is perceived as this up-and-coming coach, 'he's new, he's fresh,' and Pochettino isn't; in fact, he's older than Pochettino, which some people don't seem to realize.
"I don't think he'll be chosen for what he's done for Ajax in terms of success because that's something you expect at Ajax. But what they've accomplished in the Champions League, in terms of reaching the semi-finals, how they play football, and their group stage performance this season. They'll be disappointed to lose to Benfica, but I think it's a gutsy decision because I believe Manchester United now needs to start making bold decisions, including those concerning the players, such as Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo."
Ajax denies having reached a deal with Manchester United.
While there have been speculations that Manchester United is planning to hire Ten Hag in the summer, Ajax has denied such a deal.
According to reports, the manager has a €2 million release clause in his contract, which the Red Devils are set to exercise soon.
