The hormone insulin signals the presence of fuel (glucose) in the blood. This hormone stimulates all reactions that takes glucose out of the blood. However, the body has designed itself in such a way that once insulin is stimulating reactions that move glucose out of the blood, another hormone called glucagon does the reverse. Thus glucagon stimulus all reactions that increase the blood glucose level. Hence the blood glucose level is always in normal physiological range for everything normal person.
Insulin stimulates GLYCOLYSIS and inhibits gluconeogenesis but glucagon does the reverse. However, type 2 diabetics are characterized by an insulin that fails to inhibit gluconeogenesis. Thus their insulin is present but not functional. Non functional insulin means glycolysis fails and gluconeogenesis occurs. This situation causes a potentially dengerous increase in the blood glucose level, a condition called hyperglycemia.
