Participants in a national debate on climate change adaptation finance emphasized the necessity for a monitoring mechanism to track the use of monies allocated to climate change initiatives in national budgets.
They said that this would improve the monitoring and assessment of such programs targeted at reducing the country's climate change impacts.
According to them, while governments had been allocating funding for the battle against climate change in their budgets on an annual basis, the funds were not targeted or specified, making monitoring and reporting problematic.
Collaboration is key.
The participants, who included representatives from civil society organizations, ministries, departments, and agencies, also urged the media to monitor and report on climate change programs for which monies had been provided in budgets.
They stated that the battle against climate change is a common obligation shared by citizens, the private sector, and the government, and that everyone must play a role in reducing the country's impact.
Dialogue
The delegates stated these opinions at a national conversation conducted in Accra yesterday to review the government's commitment to mitigating climate change impacts on the country at the global, continental, and national levels, as well as the country's climate change finance.
SEND Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, organised the event with the help of Oxfam.
