Two individuals on trial for allegedly holding fraudulent metres and attempting to distribute them to unsuspecting Electricity Company of Ghana customers have been granted bail by the New Abirem Magistrate Court (ECG).

Anthony Tuffour and Michael Bediako, the accused, were each given bail in the amount of GH10,000 with two sureties and were ordered to return to court on April 26, 2022.

Mr. Simon Amezugbeh, the first prosecution witness, spoke in court about how the accused contacted him with the goal of selling metres to clients.

Mr Amezubeh, who is also the ECG's Abirem District Manager, testified in court that the two accused contacted him last year and stated they had obtained several metres from their Member of Parliament for onward transportation.

The prosecution witness said in court that he confirmed the information with the MP, who denied knowing about the metres.

He then demanded a sample, and the suspects arrived with a metre with the Ministry of Energy's logo. The metres failed to meet both ECG and Ministry of Energy requirements when tested.

Mr Amezubeh then alerted the ECG Revenue Protection Unit and the police. The suspects were apprehended in July after several interactions and provided two more samples of the metres.
