After a skirmish over a stun gun, a white cop fatally shot a black man in the back of the head, according to police footage.

Patrick Lyoya, 26, is seen running from a police officer during a traffic check on April 4 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Mr. Lyoya is then shot as he lies face-down on the ground, with the officer, who has not been identified, asking him to "let go" of his Taser.

Protests have erupted in response to the shooting.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) on Wednesday, asking that the name of the officer-involved be made public.

The event is presently being investigated by state police. According to the office of civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Lyoya family, Mr. Lyoya is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and has lived in Grand Rapids for roughly five years.

The GRPD revealed film from a police body camera, a police unit's dashcam, a cellphone, and a home security system on Wednesday.

On April 4, soon after 08:00 local time (12:00 GMT), the police pulled over Mr Lyoya's vehicle, according to one of the recordings.

According to CNN, the officer chose to pull over the automobile because of illegal registration. Mr Lyoya exits the vehicle, but the police requests that he return. Mr Lyoya, who appears perplexed, remains silent.
